Shock wave therapy has previously been known for the treatment of kidney stones, but since the early 1990's it has been used in other areas of the body, particularly in certain othopaedic conditions even where there is no calcium formation. For this reason, some people now use the term orthotripsy to describe ESWT where it is used in this way. ESWT is not considered as a 1st line treatment for these conditions which often can be managed with a combination of other treatments including rest, anti-inflammatory medications, splints, cortisone injections and physiotherapy. ESWT provides a very viable alternative to surgery, however, should these first line treatments fail. It will not cure all conditions however. |
